PK Activity 4 – Mirror Me


Identity is such an important part of growing up. Children need to feel a sense
of who they are, both independently and within the group. This mirror movement game is perfect for exploring this. The goal of the game is for pairs of children to watch
and mirror each other’s movements. This movement game can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make it. It all depends on how you move! To be successful, each partner needs to watch each other carefully and be the mirror that reflects exactly what they see.


Children play a cooperative game to build self-identity and self-awareness as student pairs mirror each other’s movements.

Principle Overview

A sense of belonging is absolutely necessary for our health and well-being.The fragile “roots of belonging” are planted and nurtured in the elementary years. It is a crucial time for students to feel their place and purpose in the school group. From these roots, the whole child blooms into a contributing member of community. IM4U challenges all of us to seek out our purpose and experience that purpose in our lives.

Goals and Objectives:

  • Develop personal identity by seeing oneself reflected in the movements of a friend.
  • Build a feeling of safety and security within a group by working cooperatively with others.
  • Prepare to have the Tape song available to play during activity.
  • If available, provide a full length mirror to allow children to explore body movements.
  • Add a twist to this activity by stopping the music periodically and have children “freeze” in place until the music begins again to encourage listening skills.
Cooperation and teamwork are integral skills for creating a sense of community. When children discover the benefits of working in groups, they learn how cooperation promotes a feeling of purpose and helps everyone feel like they are a part of a learning community. Working with others encourages important learning skills such as listening, communicating, taking turns, and participating with the group. Group work can increase creativity, problem solving, and help with difficult tasks. When we work as a team, we can win together.

  • Throughout the unit activities, review skills that are important for cooperation. For example:
    • Listen to everyone in the group.
    • Take turns.
    • Do your part.
    • Say encouraging words.

Activity Steps

  • Connector.

    Gather children into a circle. Introduce this game by inviting children to mirror your movements. Make a movement and have them copy it. Move slowly so that they can move in time with your movement. This will be a good introduction to them doing it with a partner.

  • Connector.

    Remind children that one purpose they have is to support each other. We can do that by showing a friend that we really see and support them.

  • Connector.

    As a demonstration, move your hands and arms slowly in different ways as you ask children to move with you. Change your movements several times. When you are complete, tell children how good you felt when they were supporting your movements.

  • Connector.

    Now it is their turn. Invite children to choose a partner to move with. Explain that one will be the mover and the other is the mirror that replicates the other’s moves.

    Play the Tape song. as children begin to move. It works best to have children do this sitting first and then add more active movements.

  • Connector.

    Periodically, stop the music and have children switch roles.

  • Connector.

    After a few trades, have children find another pair to move with. As before, one child is the mover and the other three must mirror his or her movements.

  • Connector.

    After the game, invite children to share how it felt to have a friend copy their movements and why they felt that way. You might also ask the children to think about ways they had to stick together using cooperation and teamwork to play this game.
